Born on 8th September 1956, he was brought up in an atmosphere of theatre. His uncle, Bijon Bhattacharjee, is considered the father of modern Bengali theatre. His parents, Jagadish and Monika Chakrabarty were very actively involved in theatre along with his uncle and aunt, Jochhon and Chandra Dastidar. Having completed most of his education in New Delhi, he shifted to Kolkata with work just so he could get involved with the theatre scene here. He joined Charbak in 1983.
After his father's death in 1984, Sabyasachi left his job and joined Sonex, an audio-video production company that was formed by Jochhon Dastidar. Sonex was producing television programmes for Doordarshan and he was actively involved in their production. Jochhon Dastidar decided to bring him in front of the camera with his serial, Tero Parbon. Playing the character of Gora, he stormed every Bengali household and won everyone's hearts. Tero Parbon became a huge hit and a star was born. Soon after he made his debut on the big screen with Tapan Sinha's Antardhan (1992). But it was with Prabhat Roy's Shwet Pathorer Thala (1992) that he became a name to reckon with in the Bengali Film Industry.
Many summers have passed since then and Sabyasachi Chakrabarty has become a nationwide star with Hindi films like Dil Se (1998), Khakee (2004) and Parineeta (2005), while cementing his place in the history of Bengali cinema with over 200 films and many memorable characters among which his portrayal of Satyajit Ray's Feluda in Sandip Ray's films is the most iconic.
